January 31, 1916 (Mao, the twelfth lunar month 27), Yenching University was founded, president of the American missionary John Leighton Stuart. the
Stuart Redden (John Leighton Stuart ,1876-1962), the American Presbyterian missionaries, diplomats and educators. Born in June 1876 in Hangzhou, parents are missionaries in China. Missionary in China in 1904, was involved in creating the Hangzhou Yuying College (later the University of Zhijiang). In 1906, the only son of John Leighton Stuart Jack, also born in Hangzhou. 1908 should be employed by the Nanjing Jinling Theological Seminary, Stuart their wives and children away from Hangzhou to his new post. In 1919, he was appointed president of Yenching University, the school long. 1946, then U.S. ambassador to China, left China in August 1949. September 19, 1962 and died in Washington, DC.
